Governments have passed measures to phase out incandescent light bulbs. In some jurisdictions this has been done through legislation, while in others through voluntary measures. The aim is to encourage use of more energy efficient lighting alternatives, such as compact fluorescent lamp (CFL's) and LED lamps. Brazil and Venezuela started to phase them out in 2005 and other nations are planning scheduled phase-outs: Australia, Ireland and Switzerland in 2009; Argentina, Italy, Russia and the United Kingdom by 2011; Canada in 2012; the European Union by September 2012; and the U.S. between 2012 and 2014.

The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that rapid adoption of LED lighting in the U.S. over the next 20 years can:

  • Deliver savings of about $265 billion.

  • Avoid 40 new power plants.

  • Reduce lighting electricity demand by 33% in 2027

ENERGY STAR qualifies that LED lights consume 75% less energy than conventional incandescent lights.
O.L.E.D. (Organic Light Emitting Diodes). OLED’s (pronounced OH-led’s) consist of sheets of carbon-based compounds that glow when a current is applied through transparent electrodes. While not yet market ready, OLED’s will function like a thin film on a wall or ceiling that illuminates a room. Like Led’s, OLED technology is advancing rapidly.
